Plateau United Football Club, based in Jos, Nigeria, competes in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL). Before 1991, they were known as the JIB Strikers FC. The club’s name was previously associated with their cross-town rivals, Mighty Jets.

Brief History:

  • Founded in 1975 as JIB Strikers FC, Plateau United won their first major silverware in 1999 by clinching the Nigeria Cup. They secured a 1-0 victory over Iwuanyanwu Nationale, with Donatus Iloka scoring the decisive goal.
  • Despite losing in the finals in 1993 and 1998, Plateau United made their continental debut in 2000. However, they were eliminated after their first tie.
  • The club experienced promotion and relegation cycles but regained top-tier status in 2015.

Achievements:

  • Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL): Plateau United won the league title for the first time in 2017, led by coach Kennedy Boboye.
  • Nigerian FA Cup: They secured the cup in 1999 and were runners-up in 1993 and 1998.
  • Preseason/Friendly Unity Preseason Tournament: Champions in 2021.

Performance in CAF Competitions:

  • CAF Cup Winners’ Cup: One appearance in 2000 (First Round).
  • CAF Champions League: Participated in 20182020/21, and 2022/23.
  • CAF Confederation Cup: Competed in 2018 and 2022/23.
