Liverpool is anxiously awaiting scan results after fears that record signing Alexander Isak may have suffered a broken leg during Saturday’s 2–1 Premier League victory over Tottenham in London, reports confirmed Monday.
The Sweden forward, 26, was injured while scoring Liverpool’s opening goal following a sliding challenge from Spurs defender Micky van der Ven. Isak, who had come on as a second-half substitute, was unable to celebrate and left the pitch visibly distressed.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot admitted after the game that the situation was concerning.
“If a player doesn’t even try to come back, that is usually not a good thing, but I cannot say anything more than that,” he said.
“That is just gut feeling and nothing medical… let’s not be too negative yet. Let’s hope he is back with us soon.”
According to The Athletic and Sky Sports, Liverpool fear the worst—a broken leg—which would sideline Isak for an extended period.
The injury comes after a challenging start to life at Anfield for the club’s £125 million ($168 million) record signing from Newcastle. Isak has managed just 16 appearances and three goals since his arrival on transfer deadline day, with his season disrupted by a late pre-season and a subsequent groin injury.
Any extended absence would be a major setback for Slot, especially with Mohamed Salah away at the Africa Cup of Nations and Cody Gakpo not expected back from a muscle injury until early next year. This leaves Liverpool relying on Hugo Ekitike, who has scored five goals in his last four games, and the little-used Federico Chiesa as the only senior forwards available.
Liverpool’s season has already seen turbulence, with their Premier League title defense faltering after a poor run of results. However, the team has regained momentum, climbing to fifth in the table and extending their unbeaten league run to five games.
