REJOINDER: SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON THE INCIDENT OF JUNE 27, 2025, AT ACHIEVERS UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL PITCH
The attention of the Methodist High School, Owo Old Students’ Association (METHSOOSA) Sports Committee has been drawn to a regrettable verbal altercation that occurred during the group match between Methodist High School, Owo (MHSO) and Upenmen Community High School, held at the Achievers University Football Pitch on Friday, 27th June, 2025, as part of the ongoing Olowo’s Cup Competition.
It is important to address, for the sake of clarity and posterity, the verbal attack directed at two of our respected members — Chief Sunday Aladegoroye and Chief Seco — by Chief Olakiigbe, a member of the competition’s organizing team. We find it unfortunate that rather than applaud the visible efforts of METHSOOSA in supporting our alma mater both morally and materially, Chief Olakiigbe and the coach of New Church Grammar School, Mr Aladejimokun, made certain unpleasant and dismissive remarks that not only belittled those efforts but nearly escalated into a physical confrontation.
The unfortunate incident was only doused by the timely and commendable intervention of Mr Sunday Ijanawo (Platini), a fair-minded and humble member of the organizing committee, whose maturity helped restore calm and decorum. It is equally disturbing to recall that Chief Olakiigbe allegedly boasted that it would cost him nothing to influence match officials against MHSO. Such statements, if truly made, do not only undermine the integrity of the competition but threaten the very spirit of sportsmanship and fairness which the Olowo’s Cup is intended to promote.
Let it be clearly stated, however, that our previous remarks or reactions to this development should not be misconstrued as a blanket criticism of the entire organizing committee or the revered institution of the Olowo’s Cup. We hold in the highest esteem the vision behind this noble tournament, especially as championed by His Imperial Majesty, Oba Dr. Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, the Olowo of Owo. His vision of using football to foster unity, discover talents, and promote community development is commendable and worthy of every support.
We deeply appreciate the organizers’ efforts in putting together a competition that continues to inspire hope and ambition among our youths. We also reaffirm our unwavering respect for the Olowo of Owo, our royal father and symbol of unity, progress, and peace in the land. Long may His Imperial Majesty reign in wisdom, strength, and glory.
We, as old students of Methodist High School, Owo, will continue to support our alma mater, not out of pride or contest, but out of love for the institution that helped shape us and the belief that through sports and education, we can build a better future for our children and community.
Thank you.
