The countdown to the biggest football tournament in history has begun, and Sahel Sports News is taking fans behind the scenes like never before. Our 2026 FIFA World Cup Venue Tour officially kicked off in Atlanta, Georgia, with Chief Kasali Obanoyen, Editor-in-Chief of Sahel Sports News, giving viewers an exclusive walk-through of the legendary Mercedes-Benz Stadium—one of the crown jewels of the upcoming global football extravaganza.

As the world prepares for a record-breaking 48-team World Cup co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Sahel Sports News is going city by city across the U.S. and Canada, delivering up-close previews of the action, architecture, and anticipation building in each venue. And there’s no better place to start than Atlanta—a city that fuses Southern charm with international energy and sports prestige.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium: A Modern Marvel with Global Dreams

Chief Obanoyen’s recent on-site tour captured the full grandeur of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which FIFA refers to as “Atlanta Stadium” during the tournament. Opened in 2017 and already host to Super Bowls, MLS Cups, and NCAA Championships, the stadium now sets its sights on the world’s most-watched sporting event.

With over 71,000 seats, a retractable roof that opens like a camera shutter, and the largest 360-degree video board in sports, Mercedes-Benz Stadium blends technological prowess with visual spectacle. “This place is electric,” said Chief Obanoyen in the tour video. “You can feel the anticipation rising with every step.”

Features Built for Football’s Biggest Stage

From design to sustainability, the stadium stands ready to deliver a world-class experience:

  • Natural Grass Conversion: In line with FIFA standards, the stadium will transition from artificial turf to natural grass by February 2026. This ensures optimal gameplay and player safety during matches.
  • LEED Platinum Sustainability: The venue ranks among the greenest in the world, with solar panels, rainwater recycling systems, and energy-efficient features. Its eco-friendly design aligns perfectly with FIFA’s vision of a more sustainable tournament.
  • Fan-First Experience: Affordable concessions, accessible design, immersive fan zones, and 360-degree visuals all point to a seamless and inclusive matchday experience. Add to that Atlanta’s culinary, musical, and cultural flair, and fans can expect more than just great football—they’ll get a celebration of life.

Atlanta’s World Cup Legacy Takes Shape

Set to host eight matches—including five group-stage games, a Round of 32, a Round of 16, and a high-stakes semi-final—Atlanta is more than just a pit stop. It’s a global football stage in the making. With the world’s busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, and robust hotel and transport systems, the city is ready to welcome the world.

The economic impact will be massive, with projections topping $500 million, spurring investments across hospitality, retail, infrastructure, and tourism. Local businesses are preparing to ride the World Cup wave, while community programs and fan festivals will ensure that locals and visitors alike feel the heartbeat of the tournament.

A City That Knows How to Host

Atlanta has proven its ability to deliver world-class events. From the 1996 Summer Olympics to major league championships, the city brings experience, diversity, and an unmatched cultural rhythm. As Chief Obanoyen put it, “Atlanta isn’t just hosting matches—it’s hosting the world.”

Mercedes-Benz Stadium stands as a symbol of that ambition—where cutting-edge design meets warm Southern hospitality. For fans making travel plans, Atlanta promises a thrilling combination of football, culture, accessibility, and legacy.

The Sahel Sports News World Cup Tour: What’s Next?

The Atlanta stop is just the beginning. Sahel Sports News is taking you to every stadium that will host the 2026 FIFA World Cup across the U.S. and Canada, including:

  • SoFi Stadium (Los Angeles, CA)
  • MetLife Stadium (New York/New Jersey)
  • BC Place (Vancouver, Canada)
  • BMO Field (Toronto, Canada)

Each leg of the journey will showcase not just venues but also the spirit of each city—its people, preparation, and passion for the beautiful game.
