In the heart of Methodist High School, Owo (MHSO), lies a football pitch that should symbolize hope, unity, and athletic excellence. Instead, it has become a bone-dry landscape that raises serious concerns about player safety, aesthetics, and the school’s legacy as it approaches its 60th anniversary.
The journey of this pitch has been nothing short of a rollercoaster. Once engulfed by thick vegetation, the efforts of the Sports Committee transformed it into a functional field—a commendable feat achieved through sheer dedication and hard work. But the weather and lack of consistent maintenance have taken their toll. Today, the surface is arid and unforgiving, posing a real risk of injuries to players. The dust-filled air and cracked soil make it clear that urgent intervention is required.
A Cry for Immediate Action
As alumni, students, and stakeholders look forward to the school’s 60th anniversary, the sorry state of the football pitch has become a rallying cry. A meeting of the National Executive Council (Exco) and the anniversary committee is expected to take place soon, and this issue should feature prominently on their agenda.
A suggestion has already been floated: the Exco should visit the pitch for an on-site inspection to appreciate the current challenges and brainstorm sustainable solutions. This will ensure that the school football field becomes more than a cosmetic project—it can be a centerpiece of pride and functionality for the school community.
The Responsibility of the Sports Department
While the Sports Committee has done an admirable job reviving the field from its forested state, questions are being raised about their ability to maintain the progress. This is not just a question of resources but of expertise and planning. Developing a robust maintenance strategy, possibly involving irrigation systems, proper drainage, and periodic reseeding, could be the difference between a lush green pitch and the current eyesore.
Stakeholder Collaboration is Key
For the football pitch to truly represent the ideals of MHSO, a collaborative effort is essential. The National Exco, Sports Committee, alumni, and school administration must align their goals and resources. This is not just about the field; it’s about preserving the school’s legacy and ensuring that future generations of students have a space to nurture their athletic talents safely.
A Call to Action
As the 60th anniversary looms, the football pitch represents more than just a physical space—it is a metaphor for the school’s ability to adapt, thrive, and honor its traditions. Stakeholders must seize this moment to implement a sustainable plan that transforms the field into a symbol of pride.
The time for action is now. Whether through alumni contributions, technical expertise, or strategic partnerships, the dream of a lush green, well-maintained football pitch is achievable. Methodist High School, Owo, deserves nothing less.
