54 years old, Yukako Fukushima: A powerlifting legend eyeing her 7th appearance at TWG in 2025
At 54 years old, Yukako Fukushima of Japan continues to dominate the world of powerlifting, a sport typically associated with athletes in their prime physical years.
A pioneer in the sport, Fukushima has achieved extraordinary success, with 8 World Open Powerlifting titles under her belt, and a career spanning more than two decades. As she prepares for her 7th appearance at The World Games in Chengdu 2025, the Japanese powerlifter is an embodiment of resilience, longevity, and an example of to us all.
Fukushima’s journey in powerlifting began in 1999 with her first world championship. Her career reached a new milestone in 2001 at The World Games in Akita, Japan, a defining moment that sparked a deep connection with the global competition.
“The World Games is a special place for me,” Fukushima reflected, recognising the influence the event has had on her career. “I worked hard with my husband, who is also my coach, to make it happen. I never imagined that this would turn into a journey lasting over 20 years.”
