*The Controversial Reign of Dr. Mohammed Sanusi: A Tale of Power, Politics, and Nationality*
By Sylvanus Ofekun
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is no stranger to controversy, but the impending decision to extend the tenure of Dr. Mohammed Sanusi as General Secretary for another three years has sparked a fresh wave of scrutiny and debate. As the NFF General Assembly prepares to convene in Asaba, Delta State on October 4, 2024, the fate of Dr. Sanusi hangs in the balance, with his leadership coming under intense criticism and questioning.
Dr. Sanusi’s journey within the NFF ranks is a tale of ascent marred by allegations of impropriety and disregard for established statutes. Starting as a contract staff in 2007, he rose through the ranks to become the Director of Competition before being appointed as General Secretary by the Amaju Pinnick-led board in 2014. What followed was a series of tenure extensions that have raised eyebrows and drawn ire from critics.
The appointment of Dr. Sanusi has been a clear violation of both the NFF Statute and the Federal Government Public Service Rule. Article 63.2 of the NFF Statutes explicitly states the qualifications and appointment process for the General Secretary, emphasizing the need for professional qualifications and adherence to private law agreements. Similarly, the Federal Government Public Service Rule on Contract Appointment outlines strict guidelines on the duration of contract appointments, which Dr. Sanusi’s tenure has far exceeded.
The remuneration of Dr. Sanusi has also come under intense scrutiny, with rumours swirling about a monthly salary of $10,000. This exorbitant figure, allegedly sourced from funds meant for football development, has raised questions about financial transparency and accountability within the NFF. Critics have pointed out the stark disparity between Dr. Sanusi’s salary and that of the Nigerian President, highlighting the apparent imbalance and lack of justification for such high compensation.
Criticism of Dr. Sanusi’s leadership extends beyond financial matters to questions of competence and integrity. Accusations of replacing skilled professionals with less competent individuals and reassigning capable staff to stifle dissent have cast a shadow over his tenure. The alleged manipulation of staffing decisions to consolidate power and avoid challenges has raised concerns about the culture of governance within the NFF under Dr. Sanusi’s leadership.
In a recent twist, Dr. Sanusi’s nationality has become a point of contention, with reports suggesting a shift in his claimed ties from Kebbi State to Ogbomosho, Oyo State. This apparent attempt to curry favour with influential figures in Aso Rock and secure his position has further fueled speculation and skepticism surrounding his motives and allegiances.
As the NFF General Assembly approaches, the decision on Dr. Sanusi’s tenure extension will be a pivotal moment for Nigerian football. The outcome of this deliberation will not only shape the future of the NFF but also serve as a litmus test for transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership within the organization. The controversies surrounding Dr. Sanusi’s reign underscore the urgent need for reform and adherence to established rules and principles in the governance of Nigerian football.
