Defending champions face Community Grammar School Emure-Ile in Sunday’s final as MHSO Kings seek consolation against Upenmen High
The stage is set for another exciting weekend of football as the Methodist High School, Owo (MHSO) Queens and MHSO Kings prepare for decisive encounters in the 2026 edition of the prestigious Olowo’s Cup.
While the Queens will be chasing a historic back-to-back triumph in the female category, the Kings will be fighting to salvage a podium finish in the male competition after narrowly missing out on a place in the final.
The MHSO Queens, as the school’s female football team is popularly known, will face Community Grammar School, Emure-Ile in the female final on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo.
Kick-off time is expected to be announced by the organisers.
For the Queens, Sunday’s encounter is more than just another final.
It is an opportunity to defend the crown they won in the maiden edition of the competition last year and further establish themselves as one of the dominant forces in female school football in Owo.
The defending champions have been in outstanding form throughout the 2026 competition.
The MHSO Queens won all their preliminary-stage matches before progressing through the quarter-final and semi-final rounds with victories, maintaining their unbeaten run and booking their place in the grand finale.
Their impressive campaign has raised expectations among students, old students, parents, supporters and the wider MHSO community, who will be hoping the Queens can complete another remarkable campaign by retaining the trophy.
But standing between them and another championship medal is a determined Community Grammar School, Emure-Ile side, which will be looking to upset the defending champions and claim the female title.
The final therefore promises to be a fascinating contest between a reigning champion determined to retain its crown and a challenger hungry to create its own history.
KINGS SEEK BRONZE AFTER SEMI-FINAL HEARTBREAK
Meanwhile, the MHSO Kings will be seeking consolation when they take on Upenmen High School in the third-place match of the male category.
The match is scheduled for Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo.
The Kings’ hopes of reaching the final suffered a setback after they were defeated by fellow Owo school New Church Grammar School in the semi-final.
They will now have to regroup quickly and channel their disappointment into a strong performance against Upenmen High School in their battle for the bronze medal.
For the Kings, a third-place finish would provide some consolation after another competitive campaign.
The MHSO Kings also reached the final of last year’s maiden edition but settled for the silver medal after losing to Imade College, Owo, in the male final.
They will therefore be determined to avoid leaving the 2026 competition empty-handed.
METHSOOSA SPORTS COMMITTEE CHARGES TEAMS
As the two teams prepare for their respective decisive matches, the Chairperson of the Methodist High School Old Students Association Sports Committee (METHSOOSA Sports Committee), Lady Bosede Adebayo, has charged both teams to give their best and fight for victory.
Lady Bosede urged the players to go all out in their respective matches, stressing that victory would be the best way to justify the confidence, resources and financial commitments invested in their campaign.
According to her, the teams have received considerable support from the Sports Committee and should therefore demonstrate their appreciation through commitment, discipline and results on the pitch.
She further charged the players to remain focused, play as a team and give everything necessary to bring glory to Methodist High School, Owo.
Her message is particularly significant as the Sports Committee has continued to invest in the development of football and other sporting activities in the school, with the aim of creating opportunities for young talents to develop and excel.
“OWOBLOW” Dr OWOLABI TO GRACE OLOWO’S CUP FINALS
Adding further glamour to the weekend’s football fiesta is the expected presence of former Nigerian international footballer Dr Felix “Owoblow” Owolabi, who will serve as the Guest of Honour at the final matches.
Owolabi, a respected figure in Nigerian football, is expected to add colour and prestige to the closing stages of the competition while providing an inspiring presence for the young footballers.
His presence will also provide an opportunity for the participating young talents to interact with and draw inspiration from one of Nigeria’s celebrated football figures.
TWO MATCHES, TWO MISSIONS
For the MHSO teams, the weekend presents two different missions.
The Kings want bronze.
The Queens want the crown.
And for the Methodist High School community, both matches represent an opportunity to celebrate the growth of school football and the continued investment in young sporting talents.
All eyes will therefore be on Rufus Giwa Polytechnic this weekend as the Kings begin the battle for third place on Saturday, before the Queens return on Sunday to defend the title they won last year.
