Next Sunday: Women’s African cup of nations champions will pocket USD 2 million
Malawi, the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) debutants, have already written their names in the history books, but that story will continue on Sunday when they face Cameroon in the Final decider in Rabat at 20h00 local time (19h00 GMT).
The winner of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s WAFCON Morocco 2026 will walk away with the prestigious trophy and the significantly increased prize money of USD 2 Million.
The USD 2 Million Prize Money is among the highest in women’s national team football.
Malawi make history
Malawi have enjoyed a remarkable run in this year’s competition. The Scorchers progressed through the group stages before underlining their ambition in the knockout rounds.
In the quarter-finals, they defeated Ghana 2-1, securing a deserved semi-final berth and, at the same time, qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The Malawians continued their extraordinary run in the last 4 with a 3-1 victory over Algeria, booking their place in the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON final in some style.Sisters Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga have once again been instrumental in this exceptional campaign, providing the attacking threat and ambition for a team that has continued to break new ground throughout the tournament.
Cameroon return to the final after 10 years
Cameroon will play in their first final since 2016, when the Indomitable Lionesses lost to Nigeria.
Their route to the 2026 decider has included two impressive knockout victories.
In the quarter-finals, they produced one of the biggest upsets of the tournament by eliminating defending champions and record 10-time winners Nigeria 1-0, gaining some revenge for their defeat in the final a decade ago.
Driven by a particularly solid defence and the decisive saves of goalkeeper Michaely Kyria Bihina, the Indomitable Lionesses then held hosts Morocco scoreless in the semi-finals.
After 120 minutes without a goal, Cameroon prevailed 3-1 in the penalty shoot-out, eliminating the hosts in front of a partisan crowd at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium.
The bronze-medal match will see Morocco face Algeria in a Maghreb derby at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat on Saturday at 17h00 GMT.
