Gateway Games Tragedy : Sports Writers Task Kano Gov’t To Immortalize 22 Victims Of Auto Crash

Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kano Chapter has commemorates the one year anniversary of the tragic death of 22 Kano athletes, whose loss their life in an tragic auto crash on their way back from the Ogun Gateway Games on May 31, 2025.
SWAN in an statement issued on Sunday in Kano said “ Their untimely passing remains a profound loss for the sporting community and the entire state.
“SWAN prays to Allah to forgive the departed athletes’ shortcomings and grant their families the strength and fortitude to endure this irreparable loss.
“In honor of the fallen athletes, SWAN calls on the Kano State Government to commemorate their lives through enduring initiatives.
“Suggestions include naming a sports facility after them or establishing a memorial to ensure that their legacy is preserved and celebrated for generations.
“SWAN further appeals to the government to promote grassroots sports programs that nurture young talent, ensuring the development of future champions.
The statement signed by Muhammad Nur Tijani, the Secretary SWAN, Kano Chapter said “The association emphasizes on the importance of providing and improving sports facilities across the state, as these are crucial for discovering and developing emerging athletes.
“All athletes are encouraged to remember the 22 departed sportsmen in their prayers and to organize tournaments in their memory.
“These acts will celebrate their contributions and ensure that their impact on Kano sports is never forgotten.
“May the memories of these athletes continue to inspire excellence, discipline, and passion within Kano State’s sporting fraternity,” SWAN said in a statement.
