Atlanta, Georgia – Chelsea FC kicked off their FIFA Club World Cup campaign with a commanding 2-0 victory over MLS side Los Angeles FC at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Goals from Pedro Neto and new signing Enzo Fernandez either side of halftime secured a winning start for Enzo Maresca’s side in Group D.
However, the impressive performance on the pitch was juxtaposed with a noticeable number of empty seats. Only 22,137 fans attended the match in the 71,000-capacity stadium, a reflection of the slow ticket sales that have been a talking point at FIFA’s new-look tournament. The 3 PM ET Monday kickoff, reportedly scheduled to suit European TV audiences, also contributed to the reduced attendance. Both Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca and LAFC manager Steve Cherundolo acknowledged the impact of the unusual atmosphere on the game.
“The atmosphere and environment was a bit strange. The stadium was almost empty,” remarked Maresca after the match, though he remained pleased with his team’s performance. “Very good result. At this stage of the season it’s also normal that you have to manage different kinds of things. Overall I think the performance has been good and we won the game.”
LAFC’s Steve Cherundolo offered a broader perspective, “I think it is different each game you look at. In the Rose Bowl in LA, there was a huge crowd for the game between PSG and Atletico Madrid. Maybe LA likes football more than Atlanta, I don’t know, we should judge at the end.”
Delap Dazzles on Debut
Chelsea’s victory was highlighted by a sensational debut performance from £30m summer signing Liam Delap. Introduced midway through the second half, the 22-year-old forward made an immediate impact, providing the assist for Enzo Fernandez’s goal in the 79th minute.
After combining effectively with Cole Palmer, Delap showcased dazzling footwork and an impressive physical presence, pressing hard from the moment he stepped onto the pitch. His cross for Fernandez’s tap-in was a testament to his understanding of Maresca’s system.
Maresca praised Delap’s quick adaptation: “The good thing about Liam is that he knows the way we want to play, so the process is quite quick. Also, we gave a chance to Dario Essugo, who is another [new] player, so good for both of them.”
Delap himself welcomed the competition for the striker spot with Nicolas Jackson, who also registered an assist in the match. “It’s always healthy to have competition. It’s football and this is an incredible club. It’s always going to be hard but I think you’ve got to thrive off the competition,” he stated, adding, “It’s a really happy feeling for me. I’m so excited to be here and to play my first game and contribute. It’s a good feeling.”
What’s Next for Chelsea?
Chelsea will look to build on this winning start as they face Flamengo in their next Club World Cup group game on Friday, with kickoff at 7 PM (UK and Ireland time). They will then conclude their Group D campaign against ES Tunis next Tuesday.
