Olowo’s Cup 2025: MHSO Boys Battle Odds to Quarterfinals, Queens Eye the Crown
The atmosphere at Achievers University football pitch was electric as the third edition of the prestigious Olowo’s Cup served up a drama-filled encounter between Methodist High School, Owo (MHSO) and Upenmen Community High School, also of Owo. The MHSO Boys, known for their grit and composure, played to a tense 1-1 draw, a result that was enough to secure them a place in the quarterfinals.
Finishing second in their group with four points—behind New Church Grammar School, who topped the group with seven points—MHSO defied odds and controversy to advance. Their next challenge comes on July 10, when they face Ahmaddiyah Grammar School in what promises to be a showdown of tactics, endurance, and raw passion.
But their journey hasn’t been smooth. Reports from the sidelines suggest that some members of the organizing committee were keen on seeing the MHSO Boys knocked out early. Whether due to rivalry or politics, these undercurrents threatened to derail their dream. However, the boys, guided by sound coaching, resilience, and remarkable discipline, stood their ground.
“It wasn’t just about football today,” a supporter from the stands said. “It was about pride, reputation, and proving that you can’t silence determination.”
Yet, as the boys gear up for their quarterfinal clash, the spotlight also shines brightly on the MHSO Queens, the female team making history of their own. Dominating their group with a perfect record of nine points, the Queens are heading to the final of the inaugural Olowo’s Female Cup, where they will lock horns with Saint Catherine Girls College, Owo.
Their journey has been nothing short of spectacular. After walking over Saint Louis Girls Grammar School in their opener, the Queens went on a winning spree—dispatching Ahmaddiyah Grammar School, Corpus Christi College, and New Church Grammar School with commanding performances.
The Queens’ path to the final paints a picture of a team in sync, sharp in attack, solid in defence, and fearless in execution. They are not just playing to win—they are playing to make a statement.
Together, both MHSO teams are rekindling the school’s long-standing tradition of sports excellence. With the boys fighting against the odds and the girls blazing a trail of dominance, Methodist High School is scripting a dual narrative of resilience and brilliance in this year’s Olowo’s Cup.
As the quarterfinals and finals approach, all eyes will remain on the red and blue of MHSO. Whether it’s the tough-as-nails Boys or the unstoppable Queens, one thing is clear: the spirit of Methodist High School is burning bright on the pitch.
